Working in partnership with the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) Phil, John and Bryan led a group of volunteers to plant a shelterbelt on this farm with a beautiful view over the River Wye. FWAG like to use a continuous membrane to suppress weeds rather than mulch mats or wood chippings. It is quick and easy to lay, and is very effective.
Shelterbelts are normally several rows of trees and shrubs forming a barrier to provide protection from the weather for crops and livestock which in turn increases productivity. It was decided that only trees were necessary for this particular shelterbelt. We were able to complete the shelterbelt in one day.
As it was half-term one 7-year-old came with his mum and did an excellent job. Children are always welcome at our tree planting events as we feel that the sooner children are able to become involved in helping the environment the better.
